The quality of a pearl is measured by many factors: the type of pearl, its luster, the thickness of its nacre, the cleanliness and texture of its surface, its color, its shape, and its size. All of these qualities play an important role in determining the value of a pearl.

Pearls are given the following grades when determining its quality:

AAA Grade- These pearls are considered flawless due to their perfect spherical shape and have a high level of luster and shine. They also have a considerably even amount of color and luster.

AA+ Grade- These pearls are near perfect at 95% flawless. These types of pearls are generally used in necklaces and bracelets.

AA Grade- These pearls usually have a smaller degree of luster and shine. The amount of color in these pearls is fairly uneven. This grade of pearl usually has slight blemishes which can be hidden by drilling.

A Grade- These pearls have an even smaller degree of luster and shine. The shape of this grade of pearl is slightly inconsistent and irregular. The naked eye can often detect some flaws.

BB Grade- These pearls sometimes appear chalky white and have less luster and shine. This grade of pearl has many blemishes, most which can be seen by the naked eye.
